Fremont Fair 2013

Thanks to all who stopped by the Knuckle Kiss booth at Fremont Fair! The event went well thanks to help from my husband Ben and some amazing friends, the great weather, and the awesome folks who stopped by.

We had a few booth changes over the course of the weekend and settled on a layout that seemed to work well.

The sign above is Ben's fabulous handiwork: the Knuckle Kiss logo on plywood with gold spraypaint. Raw and refined, just like the collection. We're working on creating more contrast between the blonde wood and the gold paint, but I think we're on the right track. My talented pal Rebecca Guss designed the logo. (She has a vintage shop on Etsy called Kyooreo! You should check it out!)

U-shaped layout on Saturday

We switched to an L-shaped layout on Sunday. This made browsing easier for passersby.

Do you like my hands!? I saw a pair in the window of Red Light and asked a salesperson if I could buy them.  It was a no-go so searched Ebay and ordered my own!

Hope to see you at Urban Craft Rising next month! And remember, if you signed up for the mailing list, you're in the running for a $20 credit on any item in my Etsy store!

Happy Summer,
Angela

Alternative Pickle for Brass and Nickel Silver

Last year I wrote a post on pickling sterling silver with a mixture of vinegar and salt, a more eco-friendly alternative to pickling with Sparex. I'm still using that method for sterling, but have moved onto something else for brass and nickel silver.

While vinegar and salt worked okay with brass, it often left a hard-to-remove pink film on the surface, which I'd have to remove by sanding. Needless to say, this can take a lot of time.

After some digging, I found a better method, again, using common household supplies: vinegar and hydrogen peroxide, aka Peracetic Acid.

Peracetic Acid is used to disinfect surfaces and even food, such as fruits, veggies, and raw meat. Pardon my hyperbole, but it works miracles on brass and nickel and rivals commercial solutions, such as Sparex.

Here's what I do:

  • In a glass or plastic bowl or jar, mix two parts distilled white vinegar with one part hydrogen peroxide
  • After soldering, submerge your piece in the mixture until all oxidation is removed. Use tongs.* Give it at least 20 minutes.
  • Occasionally agitate the piece to hasten the pickling process. Brushing your piece with a paint brush while it's submerged can speed things up.
  • Remove your piece using tongs, rinse it off, and voila--your metal is clean!
  • The surface of the brass will often look crystallized. Remedy this by gently polishing the piece with steel wool or buffing with very fine sand paper.
  • Finish as usual.

*Even though Peracetic Acid is used in food cleaners, disinfectants, etc. I recommend using it with caution. Use the mixture in a ventilated space and use tongs when handling your piece.

Here's a before-and-after of the first piece I pickled. I left it in for about 15-20 minutes. The mixture will turn blue. As the solution becomes saturated, it will become an even brighter blue than what you see in the solution below.

Disposal

Unfortunately, the mixture isn't reusable, so I recommend pickling in batches. After some experimentation, I found the solution can be used for several pieces. It tends to work until it's bright blue and cloudy. For disposal, I dilute the mixture with water and run it down the drain, or I let it sit on my back porch until it evaporates.  I'm not clear on the safest method for disposal, so if you know something, please share your thoughts in the comments!

I hope this helps!

Happy Spring,
Angela

A Year of Firsts

I hope everyone is having a happy 2013. As for me, the pads of my pointer fingers are callused like a tom cat's paw. Translation: it's been a busy few months!

I've made a simple checklist of things I want to accomplish this year for Knuckle Kiss:

The first two plans are out the gate.

 #1 SHOWS

This morning I found out my application was accepted for this summer's Fremont Fair. What a nice way to wake up. I'm tickled! The fair will be my first big event!

I implore you to come. And visit my booth while you're at it. If you have never been you can expect the following: 100s of vendors with amazing goods! Nude hippies in body paint on bikes! Street food! Bands! Beer garden!

#2  CONSIGNMENT

I've secured a collection of pieces at Butter Home, a delicious little boutique in Melrose Market on Capitol Hill. This is also my first consignment experience.

If you're in Seattle and haven't been, you must do yourself a favor and go! You'll find all manner of independently designed home goods, gifts, cards, and jewelry. It's truly a special place and I am thrilled to have some jewelry there.

Here are some of my pieces for sale at Butter Home:

#3 WHOLESALE

This one will be tricky. Any advice?

Another thing I should've added to my list is #4 BLOG MORE! I will try to be better about this in 2013.

I'm on a Roll

New pieces I'll be posting in the shop this coming week! Holler!

Campfire pendants in Sterling and Silver-fill metal
As I made these, I thought of the father and son characters in The Road by Cormac McCarthy. "Carry the fire...it's inside you. It was always there, I see it."

Bridge Double-Finger Ring in Sterling Silver
 A dainty kind of tough.

Silver Canyon Hoop Earrings
My friend said it reminded him of Cylons in Battlestar Galactica. What do you think?

Copper Homestead Hoops
Copper jewelry is underrated, but it's such a pretty metal.

Gold Kite Hoop Earrings
At the risk of dating myself, I think these earrings are hella fly.

Natural "Pickle" Solution

This one is for all you jewelers and metalsmiths out there looking for an alternative to commercial pickle solution. I suggest checking out Emily Wiser's and Jo Hollingsworth's blog posts on using vinegar and salt instead of Sparex or other noxious solutions.

For the past month or so, I've been using a vinegar and salt mix, heated in my microwave, to clean away oxides and flux that accumulate on my pieces during the soldering process. It really works! Here are before and after shots to give you a sense of how well:

As far as I can tell, salt and vinegar pickle works on sterling, brass, copper and nickel silver. It does leave a pinkish residue on my brass pieces, but that's also the case when I use Sparex. However, I find it easier to clean the "pink" off brass that's been cleaned with the vinegar-salt solution.

In any case, it's safer on your lungs and the environment. I think I'll be cleaning out my crock pot and using this mix exclusively. Thank you Emily and Jo!
